MB'S FIRST POST!!!

DSCF0065, originally uploaded by carolfoasia.

Hi Everyone! This is my first blog post. HAIRSPRAY was Bruce's favorite play and this is his favorite photo! This is actually how I style my hair.....with hairspray. It is called the Lucy-Do!
We want to thank everyone for making this trip possible. We had SO much FUN. It really was a dream come true. It has been so good to have recent, positive memories to remember and talk about while going through treatment and recovery. We head up to Providence on Monday for Bruce's 2nd round of Interleukin II (IL2). Please pray for the mental and physical strength and endurance to face this new challenge.
While you're at it, you can also pray that I will not look like this by the end of the week!

An Update from Mary Beth

Hi.

It is Saturday evening and we are still at the hospital. On Friday, Bruce skipped his 7am treatment, had his 3pm treatment and skipped his 11pm. He had a total of 12 out of 14-which is great. He had a rough night and difficult morning. His oxygen level was low and really dropped with minimal activity. They are keeping him overnight to monitor his vitals and make sure he is strong enough to come home. I am relieved he is staying for medical reasons -he is bummed to have to stay one more night away from home. My mom and dad are making their way home to Seattle this evening, will swing by the hospital to deliver Bruce's favorite pillows, much needed hugs and conversation and will then stay the night in Portland. We hope to be discharged Sun morning and look forward to getting home!

Again, thanks for all your blog comments, emails, prayers and support. We would not be able to do any of this without the love and encouragement from our family and friends!

Love,
Nurse MBA
BE STILL MY SOUL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD!!

Bruce Half Way Through

Bruce is halfway through his first Interleukin treatment. Just a reminder to pray that he perseveres.

Mary Beth is right by his side the whole way. Pray for her too.

Pray for the kids and Mary Beth's parents, Mary and Jack, back in Corvallis with the kids.

Bruce and Mary Beth are not up for visitors, but emails and comments on the blog are always a welcome encouragement!

There he is again with that bargain hat!

Monday Interleukin Update

Bruce and Mary Beth went to Providence Hospital in Portland to start his Interleukin treatment today.
It was a busy and tiring day. Bruce's pic line hurts and he has a fever, but this is a common side effect, and he is trying to rest.

Mary Beth is tired too, but she writes:
"Hanging in there. One day at a time.....knowing that God is present and near no matter where we are...NYC or Providence Hospital!"

Thanks for continuing to pray for them.

Bruce and Mary Beth Return

Bruce and Mary Beth are flying into Portland today and have an appointment with one of their doctors. Just a reminder to pray for them.

I know four kids who are very much looking forward to a reunion with their parents today. They have all been great as they have been cared for by many different people in the last week, but Mom and Dad are the best!
The two youngest had fun looking at the pictures of their parents last night on the blog, and you could tell they missed them. Please continue to pray for them.

Stay tuned for more pictures of Bruce and Mary Beth's trip in the near future!

Seattle Sonics beat New York Knicks 100-99!

As the blog editor, I'm more interested in what shows Bruce and MBA are going to, where they are eating, the romantic carriage rides in Central Park, and all those kinds of lovely things. (Yeah, I played basketball, but I don't follow it.)

BUT, out of curiosity, I wondered if the Sonics won. So, having never checked espn.com in my life, I ventured into the world of pro sports information and discovered that the Sonics did win in what was probably a very exciting game for Bruce and Mary Beth!

What is so amazing is the WINNING SHOT of the game was scored by the Seattle SuperSonics player, Rashard Lewis, who graciously donated the tickets to Bruce and Mary Beth! How positively providential!

So, guys (and some girls, like Mary L!), here is the play-by-play about the game from espn.com:

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- The Seattle SuperSonics knew Rashard Lewis' last shot was going in, and were probably a little surprised when Stephon Marbury's didn't.

Lewis made the go-ahead 3-pointer, and Seattle beat the New York Knicks 100-99 Tuesday night when Marbury missed a free throw with 0.9 seconds left.

Marbury kept up his torrid scoring with 40 points, but finished New York's miserable night at the line when his second attempt bounced out after he was fouled on a drive to the hoop with the Knicks trailing by two.

"I hate to see that happen to anybody," Seattle's Ray Allen said. "He deserved to make both of those free throws because he played a hell of a game tonight. He was definitely giving us fits all night."

The Knicks finished 24-of-38 (63 percent) at the line, ruining their comeback attempt and any hopes they had of being in playoff position by the end of the night.

"We had this game. Not even Steph's free throw, but my free throws, we just missed some big free throws," said center Eddy Curry, who was 5-of-10. "You're at the line and you miss two, or you miss one of the two, it's just like you have a feeling it's going to bite you at the end, especially in a close game like this."

Allen scored 29 points and Lewis finished with 24, including his 3 with 4.8 seconds left for the SuperSonics, who tied a season high with their third straight victory. Earl Watson matched a career high with 23 points and added nine assists.

"It was a big shot. Ray saw me wide open and when it left my hand I knew it was going in," Lewis said. "I mean that's big time, especially to do it right here in New York City in the Garden. That's something I'll always remember."

The Knicks also were trying to tie a season high with a third straight victory. They had their seven-game home winning streak snapped.

Seattle won for the fourth time in five games. Chris Wilcox added 12 points despite missing the fourth quarter after taking a shot to the head.

The Knicks entered the night a half-game behind Orlando and New Jersey for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and knowing that the Nets were visiting league-leading Dallas. But they couldn't contain Seattle's perimeter attack in the first half and their rally fell short in the second.

Without Jamal Crawford for the rest of the regular season and still missing top reserve David Lee and Nate Robinson, the Knicks got 15 points from Curry and 12 from Quentin Richardson.
Marbury did the rest, surpassing 30 points for the third straight game -- though the Knicks needed one more point from him.

"I was thinking it was good," Marbury said of his second attempt. "I missed, I've missed free throws before. It's just part of the game."

Allen scored 10 points in the final 6 1/2 minutes, including a 3-pointer after Marbury had made consecutive 3s to bring the Knicks within one; they trailed by 18 earlier in the second half. But New York kept coming, finally tying it at 95 on Richardson's jumper with 50 seconds remaining.
Seattle quickly regained the lead when Lewis put back his own miss, but Marbury answered with a three-point play to put New York up 98-97 with 42 seconds left. After a miss by Allen, Marbury missed a 3-pointer and the Sonics rushed up the floor, with Allen finding Lewis on the left side for his 3-pointer and a 100-98 lead.

"I felt great about it because when he released the shot," Allen said, "he screamed like he knew he made it and it was still on its way to the basket."

Seattle made five 3-pointers, three by Watson, to open a 31-18 lead after one quarter. The Sonics pushed the lead to 16 early in the second and were ahead by double digits for most of the remainder of the half.

The Knicks got the first basket of the second half. But the Sonics answered with seven straight points, extending the lead to 62-44 when Jared Jeffries' ugly turnover brought loud boos from the Madison Square Garden crowd and led to an alley-oop dunk for Wilcox.

New York answered with a 15-2 spurt, cutting Seattle's lead to 64-59 on Malik Rose's jumper midway through the period. The Sonics led 73-66 after three periods.

Dinner at Gallagher's

This is really Bruce's highlight: eating the prime rib, cooked just right, with a baked potato on the side. Gallagher's was fabulous-the food and service! George was our server and treated us like royalty!

It was a cold walk home from Gallagher's...but fun! Here is MBA just inside the hotel doors.

An interesting history about this famous restaurant:
Helen Gallagher and Jack Solomon launched Gallagher’s in November of 1927, a few nights before the opening of “Funny Face”, next door at the Alvin Theater, a brand-new musical by George and Ira Gershwin that starred Fred Astaire and his sister Adele.

“Funny Face” chalked up a respectable 244 performances and was one of the top hits of the 1927-1928 season. Many years and many musicals later, the Alvin is now the Neil Simon Theater and still conveniently located right next door to Gallagher’s Steak House as is the Virgina Theatre.

In 1927, with Prohibition hanging heavily over the land, Gallagher’s was the first speakeasy-a Runyonesque gathering place for gamblers, sports figures, showbiz folk and other stars of the Broadway firmament. That changed in 1933, the watershed year that saw the Depression bottom out as FDR took office and delivered on his promise to end Prohibition.

With the sale of liquor now legalized, Helen Gallagher and Jack Solomon brought an entirely new dimension to American cuisine: Broadway’s first steak house and where the “New York Strip” steak was first served.

Their idea was a totally different concept, a retreat from the formal, plush elegance borrowed from Europe that was then in favor as restaurant décor. It was back to the basics: plain plank floors, wood-paneled walls and red checked tablecloths-an informal blending of speakeasy and country inn. The dark walls were covered with photos of Broadway and Hollywood stars, business and political luminaries, and athletes past and present, including the equine performers celebrated at Belmont Park and Jamaica, New York’s showcase racetracks of then and today.

Helen Gallagher knew how to lure celebrities; she was something of one herself. Until the mid-20’s, she had been a Ziegfield Girl and the wife of a household name, Ed Gallagher, who with Al Shean made up the comedy team of Gallagher and Shean. They were the leading vaudeville and recording duo of their day until the death of Ed Gallagher. Helen then married Jack Solomon, a colorful restauranteur/gambler with a loyal and large following among what was then called the sporting element.

Helen died and Jack Solomon married Irene Hayes. Hayes was the owner of the top floral design shop in the city. Soon after Solomon dies and Irene Hayes is sole owner.

Irene after a few years decided to sell the restaurant. Out of hundreds of potential buyers, Irene Hayes chose Jerome Brody who was a great restauranteur, the originator of Restaurants Associates, in 1964. Jerome Brody’s accomplishments included the Four Seasons- Rainbow Room, the Forum of the Twelve Caesars’ Fonda del Sole and the Famous Rainbow Room. With Jerome Brody’s ingenuity and foresight, he took the refrigerator that was at the front of the restaurant and opened up the front so that the contents could be seen from the street. He stocked it with the best USDA Prime aged meat. The beef was kept at a constant 36 degrees for 21 days to insure tenderness. This practice is still followed to this day.

Today, in our 75th year- 40 of them under aegis of Jerome Brody - 58 of them as a steakhouse, the décor remains exactly the same as it was and so does the incredible mix of our clientele- showbiz people from both coasts; jocks from every calling of the sports world; business men and women from overseas and of course New York; and Big Apple visitors from Connecticut to Cannes.

Among them it is not unusual to see such celebrities as Bruce and Mary Beth Alexander, Jimmy Breslin, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., Vanessa Redgrave, T. Boone Pickens, Jackie Mason, Oliver North, Connie Chung, Jack Palance, Liz Smith, Muhammed Ali, Madonna, the stars and cast of all the top running Broadway shows on Broadway including David Letterman and Paul Shaefer, dining all at once within the spacious walls of Gallagher’s.

The knowledge and know-how that Jerome Brody brought to Gallagher’s will live forever as a great restaurant landmark in New York City.

Lunch at Tavern on the Green

At the exact time of this post, Bruce and Mary Beth are having lunch at Tavern on the Green at Central Park (graciously provided by yet another one of their friends!).
Here are some details about it:

Tavern on the Green is best known for its ambiance. Built in 1870, this Central Park gem now has a whimsical, Oz-like character. With an unrivaled backdrop and festive atmosphere, this restaurant attracts New Yorkers looking to celebrate and tourists seeking a meal with a view. A "must-see" claims Zagat.
Choose from cosmopolitan meat, fish, and seafood dishes, pastas, signature salads, and delectable desserts. Enjoy an eclectic menu of contemporary American and seasonal fare.
Be dazzled by Tavern on the Green’s glittering light: sunlight or moonlight pouring through glass walls, flickering candlelight, and the reflected light from etched mirrors. Whimsical topiaries adorn the Crystal Garden used for dancing in the summer. Hand-hewn rafters and vaulted, hand-carved ceilings rise above décor that varies from baroque to rococo. Stained glass, original paintings, antiques, and two giant murals grace the six dining rooms. Forty-five chandeliers illuminate the rooms where Manhattan’s rich and famous have dined for nearly a century.

It Just Gets Better and Better

With all these Broadway plays, some people thought that Bruce should get to go to some kind of sporting event while they were in New York. There was a possibility of a hockey game, but then, a friend of Mary Beth's in Seattle realized that the Seattle SuperSonics were playing the New York Knicks on Tuesday, but Bruce and Mary Beth were supposed to leave on Tuesday.

Well, they aren't going to leave on Tuesday anymore, and Bruce and Mary Beth will be seeing their FAVORITE team play in Madison Square Gardens on Tuesday night!

Can you say INCREDIBLE!?

The A's Have Landed

They have arrived in New York! It had rained in the morning, but the sky opened up and it was clear and beautiful by the time they got there (imagine that?). When they called, they were driving from the airport to the Hilton Hotel on Time Square in their Lincoln Towne Car with driver (graciously provided by friends). They are hoping to get some rest after having gotten up at 3 a.m. to make their 6 a.m. flight! They have reservations at a wonderful restaurant later on in the evening.

Please pray for their time and for Bruce's health and stamina so he can really ENJOY the time!

Saturday and Sunday, they will see these Broadway shows:

New York! New York!

New York City lights up
Originally uploaded by mihay.
Bruce and Mary Beth are on their way to New York City. They are leaving from Portland, Oregon Friday morning and will return on Tuesday.

They will be going to four Broadway plays and last report was that they may even be taking in a sporting event.

God pulled this all together and provided in abundant ways! We are rejoicing that they will get to fulfill this dream before they face some challenging days ahead.
